These works on paper were a lot of fun for me – a few were sold but I still feel like there could be more exploration of the subject. People feel quite strongly about cars.

Family History

My great great (great?) grandfather Alvaro Krotz was an inventor and designer who filed dozens of patents. See some of his designs here with commentary by me.He ran a shop for Sears in 1909 (for only a few years) producing the sears motor buggy. It was difficult to compete with Ford at that time and the Sear buggy didn’t last long.

Organizational History

Illustration serves a purpose. As I grew my design firm in Iowa City, much of the work was for the University located there. It wasn’t long before my clients work had me doing research in the library archives of the University and the State Historical Society. What came out of this research was a series of illustrations and paintings focused on the history of medicine in the state.

Landscape collage

A significant portion of my work over the last couple years has been that of landscape collage. In particular, Chicago lakefront collage. I love getting out in the neighborhood on my bike. Usually, with a camera phone by my side. It makes sense to me that if I will be creating a picture from a photo, there main concern with that photo is composition and depth – color and clarity are less of a concern.

It’s been a long time since posting here. Most of that time I have been busy building HD Design & Printing with my business partner. In that time have used a few subscription based software services. Most importantly was Freshbooks – at least as far as business goes.

I have been setting up and running my own web apps including Project Pier and Movable Type. I love the Professional Pack in version 4.23 for building my entire site.
